The inaugural Lady Godiva Half Marathon took place in 2005, attracting a field of 1900 half marathon runners and 500 fun runners. The event was created to help people to adopt a healthier lifestyle by becoming more active on a regular basis and was pleased to attract beginners and experienced runners in roughly equal measure.
The Lady Godiva Half Marathon is all about achieving a personal goal and is open to absolutely anyone aged 17 years or over on the day. There is also a Family Fun Run of just over 2 miles which is open to people of all ages and is a great option for those wishing to walk, run or jog a shorter distance or take part with their children.
The Lady Godiva Half Marathon is supported by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. This stream of government funding aims to enable England's 88 most deprived authorities, in collaboration with their Local Strategic Partnerships (LSP's), to improve services, narrowing the gap between deprived areas and the rest of the country. The Coventry Partnership is the city's LSP and is made up of public services such as the Council and Primary Care Trust, private companies, voluntary organisations, community organisations and residents.
Through its Health of Coventry Group, the Coventry Partnership created the half marathon project as a way to help reduce health inequalities in Coventry. The event, therefore, is all about encouraging people who do little or no physical activity to make it a regular part of their lives before, during and beyond the event itself. The Half Marathon and Family Fun Run provide fantastic and manageable goals for almost everyone and are a great chance to see increased participation in physical activity pay off.
